Review – Black Speck SeeThru Satin for 13″ MacBook Pro

Speck SeeThru Satin for 13" MacBook Pro - BlackAt the same time as I was sent the Ballistic Hard Case (which I have reviewed here) I was a received a Speck SeeThru Satin for 13″ MacBook Pro in Black to review from GearZap.com.

When I bought the MacBook Pro I looked at slip cases and couldn’t really see the point of them, and to be honest, having been using one for over two weeks I still can’t. There are some points in favour of the case:

  • it instantly cheapens the Mac: this may not sound like that much of a positive but actually it could be, the minute you put a case on a Mac it looks (from a distance, and when off/closed) like any other computer, this means it can be carried without instantly attracting attention. Which any student will tell you is a good thing, you don’t really want to be advertising the fact that you’re carrying around a grands worth of computer if you can possibly avoid it. You could also happily stick stickers to the case content in the knowledge that you’re making your make even less appealing from a distance without actually damaging it in any way.
  • it makes it quick and easy to tell whose computer it is: if you are lucky enough to live in a multi-Mac household, spotting where you’ve left yours could be a problem. Putting a coloured case on it turns your Mac from a clone of all the others into something very easy to spot.
  • it protects the aluminium (to an extent): Macs are very sturdy, Skippy’s supported the weight of a chair with a person on it (accidentally) and suffered no more than a scratch to the casing, however if you don’t want your aluminium to get dirty and scratched putting a disposable plastic case over the outside of it is a good way to go about protecting it

As a nice little detail, it is still possible to see that it’s a Mac once the lid is open as the glowing apple shows through the thin plastic, not so good if your intention is to disguise it but you can always stick a sticker over the symbol or slot a piece of paper in between the computer and the case to mute the glow.

The only negative I found for this case was that when it was first put on it had a slightly unnerving tick which went away once the plastic bent itself properly to the shape of the computer.

Overview

8/10

Besides not actually getting the point of this case it hasn’t got in the way of my computer use and, as it does distinguish my computer from Skippy’s quickly and easily it will probably stay in place.

Basically this case is too innocuous to deserve either a higher or lower rating.

Have a look at the case yourself
